What is Bach flower therapy?

Bach flower therapy is an alternative treatment developed by physician and homeopath Edward Bach. The Bach flower therapy states that flowers, plant parts, and pure spring water contain "energy" that would be beneficial to prevent illness due to a pet's lifestyle. He devised a procedure to capture this energy and process it into a healing agent.

Despite many similarities with homeopathy, Bach flower therapy is not a homeopathic treatment method. Although the means used are extremely diluted, they are based on the principle of the intuition of Edward Bach, who himself speaks of a gift of God. Infusions are made from blossoms or other plant parts in the Bach flower treatment. It suffices to cover the surface of a bowl of pure water with the appropriate blossoms and let them stand in the sun for a few hours or boil them for half an hour so that "the energy from the flowers is transferred to the water".

For preservation, that infusion is mixed with an equal amount of brandy (usually cognac), which becomes the so-called "mother tincture". This, in turn, is diluted to a healing agent, at the rate of two drops of tincture to 30 milliliters of brandy. Apart from alcohol, the resulting solutions do not contain substantial amounts of active substances.

Bach has created 37 different flower remedies, the 38th consists of Rock water, or pure spring water, mixed with brandy. An additional remedy is the rescue remedy, which is a mix of five other remedies, a kind of "first aid for stress and panic situations", and many flower therapy users always carry it with them.

Relatively little scientific research has been done into the effect of Bach flower therapy. In the few studies that have been done, no difference was found compared to placebos. In one study using clinical records (these are patients who consulted a Bach flower therapist), 88% of patients reported an improvement in emotional well-being. Of the 41 subjects with pain complaints, 19 reported pain relief.
